There is a free version and a paid version. For the average person, the free version is fine. If you want to get more intricate with such things as grading and showing different elevations, then you will want the paid version.

For residential design, you can use this program in a couple of different ways.

The first way is to design right in the program. With a click of the mouse, you can set the drawing in a perspective position. Guidelines help you make sure you are drawing correctly. You can enter actual heights and lengths of objects, such as a house. You can put in the dimensions of the house, ie., length and width. Then use something called the pull tool to extend it up to the correct height.

It is all very user friendly. Also, what is created has an artistic flair to it, which makes it a lot of fun!

You can also view different materials for landscape elements. For example, if you are drawing a patio, you can go to the Materials area and choose what you might like. There are many different materials and you can change them as you like to see the differences. Some choices are stone, pavers, brick and concrete.

A plant palette is offered also. These are fine. However, for a more sophisticated look, there are other inexpensive components you can buy to use in your design.

The second way of using Sketchup is to create a 2D drawing in such programs as AutoCad, and import it into Sketchup. In this situation, you are working from your drawing so that an exact replica of the design is created. This allows you to see what a drawing will look like when built. Changes are easily made if there is something you don't like or want to add.

Some of the components you can add to the 3D landscape design are people, cars, grills, pergolas, plants, any many, many more. These are available directly through the program or through something called Google Warehouse. They are all free.

There is a lot of flexibility with the components. You can resize or rescale them if you need to. You can also change colors of both components and materials.

By adding window components to a house, you can actually position a person inside the house. This allows you to attain a view as if you were inside looking out. What a great feature to see what your view will be like.

You can also create scenes. Scenes let you save a particular view. These scenes can also be exported into jpeg images. You can also create an animation which is a fly by or walk through of the entire design!

Any or all of these features can be used to suit your purposes. The software can be used in both simple and sophisticated ways. There are many other features available also. All in all it is a great 3D program.

And while I'm sure you're not guilty of any CSI type crimes (or are you?), I'm sure you want to figure out how to permanently delete your files and keep your private things private -- after all everyone has to have some secrets!

Why emptying your recycling bin doesn't permanently delete your files

When you tell your computer to empty its recycling bin, your operating system only deletes the records it has of the files you want to delete. Yet the files still remain on the hard drive memory.

Here's an analogy: If you think of your files as books in a library and you decide you no longer have use for a certain book. Emptying the trash is equivalent to removing the entry in the library's card catalog. The book is still there but not easily found by everyday visitors. But if someone really wanted to find it, and had a clue where to look, they quite possibly do so since it is still physically there.

What it means to permanently delete a file

To permanently delete a file, you need to not only delete its record, but also overwrite the physical portion of the hard drive where it lives. A low level format is equivalent to replacing your private file with random bits (1's and 0's). Continuing with the library analogy you need to remove remove the book, shred it, light up in flames and possibly replace it with a different book

A simple way to permanently delete?

According to Microsoft, there is a keyboard shortcut in Windows to, quote, "permanently delete files". You do this by selecting your file and hitting SHIFT+DEL. Convinced? Neither am I. What they're really explaining is a shortcut from having to move the item to the trash and then emptying the trash.

Take it a step further

Here's a poor man's version of permanent deletion. Delete your files, empty your recycle bin, and run Disk Defragmenter located in the Start menu under Accessories/System Tools. What this will do is optimize your hard drive by rearranging (most) of your files, and in doing so will most likely overwrite the files you want permanently deleted. Nice!

Do it right and do it better

While performing a defragmentation will probably do the trick, it's really not a viable solution. Waiting for disk defragmentation is not something I'd do every time I wanted to do a permanent deletion. The defragmentation process is way too long. The right way to how to permanently and quickly delete files is to use a program specifically designed for that purpose. You're in luck too because most Windows operating systems have a command line tool called CIPHER to do the trick!

Here's how to use CIPHER:

1. After closing all windows, open up a command window.

2. Type the following: cipher /w:�driveletter:�foldername where driveletter and foldername correspond to the drive a location of where your deleted file used to live.

3. Sit back and enjoy your freedom and privacy while your file is truly permanently deleted!

Here's an example:

I have a picture I want permanently deleted which stored on my computer at the following location:

C:�images�scandalous_picture.jpg

After deleting this picture and emptying the recycle bin, I would type the following (in a command prompt) to ensure that I can still run for senator (as long as they don't catch me in the airport bathroom):

C:>cipher /w:C:�images

I can then move on to my life of privacy and carefree surfing!

You can do better!

Although I'm comfortable working with the command prompt, you may not be. No worries, there are plenty of other graphical based software tools that perform true permanent file deletion -- not to mention they are much less tedious to use. Anyone who has ever left a few bananas sitting out or forgotten to change their garbage knows all too well the problem with fruit flies. It seems that once they've invaded your kitchen, you can't get rid of them. You can scrub, clean, remove tempting fruit and spray the garbage can with disinfectants, but they always come back. You can't help but cringe just looking at them.

We have always had problems with fruit flies, with one of the main reasons being that we live in an apartment and by law - must recycle. Because of where we live, we have to keep our recycling containers inside until they can be disposed of once a week. If the recyclables aren't cleaned well enough after being used, they make a perfect breeding ground for fruit flies. They love bits of rotting food remnants and seem to thrive in even the smallest amount. When fruit flies move in, they just don't want to leave and will lay eggs in and on anything they can find - fruits & vegetables left on the counter, sink drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles & cans, garbage bags, and even mops and rags.

We all know that removing the food, getting rid of the garbage & cleaning up plays a big role, but we also know what it's like to move a piece of fruit and have a swarm of fruit flies fill the air only to escape your attempts at killing them. Where are they gonna go? Obviously the ones flying around can't be easily captured or killed, so they'll linger about until they find some other place to lay eggs and the whole cycle starts again.

In all my attempts, I found the best way to capture and remove the ones that escape is to create a simple trap using a jar, plastic wrap and a piece of food. Here's how it works:

1. Get a small jar you don't plan on using again ( like a baby food jar or something similar ) and wash it out well. Make sure it is not a jar with a funky smell such as a used pickle jar or anything that use to have strong spices. You want a clean, odorless jar.

2. Take a chunk of banana and place inside the jar. This is why you want a clean, odorless jar - so that the banana smell won't be overpowered by other not-so-tempting smells. Banana seems to work the best, but you can experiment.

3. Fit a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the jar, making sure that it fits tight and well sealed around the edges. Then take a pen or pencil and poke 4 to 5 holes in the plastic, just big enough for a fruit fly to fit into. Once a fruit fly crawls in, it can't get out. You would think they would just fly back out through the holes, but they won't!

4. Place the jar in an area where you have seen the most fruit flies. Depending on the amount of fruit flies you have, you can expect to start seeing the jar fill up within just a few hours. After 24 hours, you will discover just how bad your fruit fly problem is!

This simple, inexpensive & safe method works perfectly and if you don't want the jar on public display, you can always slip it behind the garbage can, in the cupboard or even under the sink (Just don't forget about it!). You will want to empty the jar every 3-4 days before any eggs have a chance to hatch. While adult fruit flies can't easily escape through the holes, their maggots can very easily, and besides that - they are disgusting to see crawling around in the jar. You don't want to see these things crawling on your counter!

Cleaning out the jar shouldn't be a problem. If you have a kind heart, you can choose to let them go outside. Personally, I spray the little buggers with bug spray, wash out the jar and start the whole process over again if I think there are still some fruit flies left to capture.

For bad fruit fly problems, you will want to use this method for a good two weeks to make sure you've captured the majority of fruit flies. You might even want to use a few jars in different places. Before long, your kitchen will be back to normal.

It is important that you back up all of your website data to a removable drive in the event your computer crashes, is broken or is stolen. When you create website files, most of your data will be stored on the website hosting servers but, in many cases, you will have many other "builder files" that usually never make it to the hosting servers. If you lose this data you will be forced to start from scratch in many cases. Another piece of hardware that many forget about is a HD Video Camcorder. If you plan to include video on your site, you should be investing in something half decent; you can normally pick up a good video camera that also captures "still photos" for under 0.00.

Should I Change My C-Corporation to an S-Corp?

Life used to be simple. You only had two or three channels on your television, there was no such thing as texting, and if you started a business, you either incorporated, or you did not.

Most people who did go into business decided it best to form a corporation, however; mainly due to the legal protection granted with a separate legal corporate entity which protects business owner's personal assets.

The following assumes you already are set up as a C-Corp and you are thinking about converting. If you are not sure what type entity you have, take a look at your last tax return. If you filed a federal form 1120 (not a 1120-S), you are a C-Corp, and converting to an S-Corp might be a benefit to you, so please keep reading!

Should I Change My C-Corporation to an S-Corp?

What are my options?

These days, instead of the traditional C-Corporation, a business has can choose, among other things, to be an S-Corporation or a Limited Liability Company (LLC). The advantage of these style entities is that they are pass through entities. This means that, like a sole proprietorship, the earnings of the company become part of the owner's income, and all taxes are paid by the shareholder thus avoiding entirely corporate level taxation. Also, distributions, as opposed to dividends, are paid to the shareholder and unlike dividends, distributions are not taxable.

S-Corps (aka Subchapter S corporations) have been around for quite some time, but they became very popular in the 1980's when personal tax rates dropped below corporate rates. The US economy also began to change, and we saw a surge in new small business startups which is the type business most suited for Subchapter S status. Note too, it was in that time that the other popular entity for small businesses became available: LLCs.

There are still a number of C-corps around, however. Many of them would benefit from filing as an S-Corp. Given the popularity and advantages of these type entities, a C-Corp owner might be wondering if it would pay to convert to an S-Corp or an LLC. The good news is that it is not too hard to do, but the bad news is that it might not be feasible from a cost/benefit perspective.

Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to convert a C-Corp to an LLC since this involves recognizing a gain on the assets of the company and creating taxes on both the gain and the cash generated when distributed to the owner(s). But changing to an S-Corp is doable, and may offer several advantages.

Why change my C-Corp to an S Corp?

Probably the main reason people like S-Corporations is the pass through method of taxation. In a traditional corporation, the profits are taxed at the corporate level, and distributions from earnings are made via dividend. This means both the corporation and the shareholder must pay taxes. And in the case of dividends, there is actually double taxation

Also most people pay a lower amount of payroll taxes in an S-Corporation. As long as your compensation is reasonable, you can pay yourself a modest salary and take the remaining earnings out as a distribution. Since distributions are not subject to FICA/Medicare and other payroll taxes, you will benefit from less taxes.

Note that changing from "C" to "S" does change your corporate legal entity. You are still a corporation, and you not have to re-incorporate, and your original articles of incorporation apply. It is a good idea to amend them, however. Also, documenting the change in the minutes of your corporation's board meeting is highly recommended. You'll need to file the appropriate forms with the IRS. Your CPA should be able to handle that for you.

What is the downside?

Do you value your inventory using the LIFO method? Is so, you will be subject to LIFO recapture tax, and in my experience this can be a deal breaker. Essentially, the difference in your LIFO and FIFO value (this amount is called the LIFO Reserve) become a taxable income.

Fortunately, the income is taxed over four years, so if your LIFO reserve is 0,000.00, your corporation will pay taxes on 0,000.00 for four years. At 34% this is ,000.00 per year. Is it worth it? For many, the answer is no.

If you do not use LIFO, the other item that might cause problems are built-in gains. Thanks to recent tax incentives, many businesses have assets that have a very low basis. This comes about by using section 179 expense options, and more recently, bonus depreciation. This causes the tax basis to be well below the fair market value in most cases, and this difference must be calculated and presented on the tax return of the new S-Corp.

The good news here is that you do not pay taxes on this gain until it is sold. If it is sold during the holding period (currently 10 years), the gain is taxed at the corporate rate of 35%, and is taxed separate from other gains and losses generated by the new S-Corp. The thrust of the built in gains regulations is to keep a C-Corp from converting to a S-Corp, and then immediately selling off assets to take advantage of lower tax rates in the new S-Corp.

Other Issues

Other problems relate to business structure. For example, you can only have one class of stock. Also, you can only have 100 shareholders. For most small businesses however, these are not problems.

Another problem might arise if your current corporation uses a fiscal year, ie; a year that does not end December 31. S-Corps are generally required to use a calendar year unless it can be shown that the majority of the owners use a fiscal year. When converting to an S-Corp, most people simply convert to a calendar year. If a fiscal year is crucial to your business operations, this might preclude you from converting to an S-Corp

So, should you change your C-Corp to an S-Corp? The short answer: it depends. For many small businesses, this is an ideal move, but every business and every situation is different. Your CPA is a good place to start if you are considering this change.
